The meeting will include a presentation and provide a community update on our most recent campaign for

implementation of the Ravi Chander Report investigating the illegal arrests and torture of Muslim youth in India. There will be an open discussion on how to replicate similar campaigns in other parts of India.

Background on the campaign:

The AP State Minorities Commission (APSMC) appointed fact-finding committee headed by Advocate Ravi Chander has documented that several young Muslims were arrested after the bomb blasts in Mecca Masjid and Lumbini Park in 2007 without being informed of any charges, blindfolded, taken to unknown places, hands and legs tied up, suspended, beaten, stripped naked, given electric shocks, repeatedly punched, dragged, beard pulled until tufts of hair fallen, blackmailed that members of the family will also be tortured. While it is encouraging that these innocent Muslim youth were acquitted by the AP criminal court last year, so far there is no known effort from A.P. Government to consider or even an acknowledgment of the following recommendations submitted by Advocate Ravi Chander to the APSMC. The news about the report did move the Hyderabadis living overseas and prompted Indian Muslim Council (IMC-USA) to organize a letters and signature campaign. Thousands of Indian Muslims from eight states of the United States signed petitions, called, faxed, and emailed various Indian leaders and officials demanding implementation of the recommendations of the Ravi Chander report.

Indian Muslim Council-USA is the largest advocacy organization of Indian Muslims in the United States with 10 chapters across the nation. IMC-USA is a Washington, D.C. registered non-profit 501(C)(3) tax-exempt organization established in August 2002.

Muslim Women’s Shelter and Medical Center Activist Injured in Car Accident, Assistance Needed

Asma Hanif, the Founder and Director of Muslimat Al-Nisaa Shelter and Clinic for Muslim women, was recently injured in a car accident. The Baltimore MD activist, who is also chairperson of the greater Washington Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations, received moderate injuries and is alhamdulilah currently recuperating nicely. Although Sister Asma’s injuries were not life threatening, her organizational vehicle, a passenger van in which she was driving, has been totaled and is not repairable or operational. The need for a transportation van for Sister Asma’s Shelter and Clinic is crucial and greatly needed. Given the essential services that Muslimat Al- Nisaa provides for Muslim women and children, we are appealing to anyone in the community that could donate a passenger van or station wagon to do so. Any donated vehicle should be in good mechanical condition and recently inspected. Persons or organizations interested in making such a donation should contact Sister Asma Hanif at 410-466-8686. Jazaka Allahu khairan

Marylanders Plant Trees

Forests are our most strategically important natural resource. Trees protect water quality, clean our air and provide wildlife habitat. One large tree can eliminate 5,000 gallons of stormwater runoff each year, and well placed trees can help reduce energy costs by 15 to 35 percent.

Trees also enhance our quality of life, beautifying neighborhoods and highways, providing sound barriers and shade, and helping increase property values.

Today the State of Maryland is partnering with businesses, communities and citizens like you to help fund and plant new tree cover. This is a great opportunity for Muslims to participate in this initiative and apply the advice of the Prophet (PBUH) on planting a tree even if the day of judgment has approached.

The State of Maryland is offering $25 coupons on trees purchased from retailers, for details check

DAT Partnership with the University of Maryland Study on Adolescents' Evaluations of Intergroup Friendship, April 2009

Intergroup attitudes and how children reason about friendships across different groups is a vibrant area of research in child development. Researchers from the University of Maryland (Human Development Department) are interested in studying adolescents' judgments and reasoning about cross-group friendships specifically with groups that have a history of conflict.

DAT is happy to collaborate with the University of Maryland on this initiative as it will help DAT in several areas related to youth development:

1. Enable DAT youth program leaders to better understand how Muslim youth perceive other races and groups.
2. Assist DAT youth program leaders in developing youth programs that address negative peer attitudes and relations
3. Assist DAT youth program leaders in refining youth programs that address identity issues, peer pressure and societal interactions
4. Assist DAT youth program leaders in better understanding how Muslim youth perceive their identity and its relationship to others of the same age group
5. Assist DAT youth program leaders in better understanding of observed interactions with non-Muslim peers.

We are asking all parents of youth ages 14-18 (grades 9 - 12) to encourage their youth to participate in this voluntary, confidential study. Inshaa Allah it shall provide positive benefits to our youth and assist in a better understanding of the issues above.

To participate please complete the form and email to pr@taqwa.net at your earliest convenience. The study will be conducted at DAT on an upcoming Sunday during April inshaa Allah.
